you could also try to get a VA6/6.5/6.8. According to a guide, they don't have rainbow fringing.
Should be easy to spot, most non-HDG are VA6 and above. Just be sure to not pick a VA7, pic related

there's one genesis model 1 to avoid, the VA7. All others are fine.

the ultimate genesis console is easy but depends on your display and willingness to mod.
if you have a RGB tv/monitor : any model 1 except VA7 (check back panel), RGB cable, jailbars fixed, sound preamp fixed (for VA2) or sound filter adjusted (for VA3-6).
If you have S-video tv: same as above, except you can't kill jailbars.
If you have composite only : VA6-6.8, with sound filter adjusted.

The only reason that people say go for the HDG version of the Genesis is to help people pick one that will for sure have the better sound to it.

Any model 1 who's ports are like the top one in the picture is a quality model 1 Genesis.

Any Model 1 that looks like the bottom pic where the ports are is going to sound muffled as the audio amp sega picked is lower quality because sega cheapened out before coming out with the model 2.

The shitty model 1s are exceedingly rare anyway so buy away and buy the HDG version because you know it WILL come with a good motherboard revision.
