>the other had more and better RPGs
It had more, but I wouldn't say they were better.

All the Shining Forces, both Lunars, Anearth Fantasy Stories, Snatcher, Policenauts, all the Ys games on PC Engine, the PC Engine Legend of Xanadu games, Linda Cube for starters.

Not even close. SNES does not even have the best 16-bit JRPG's.

Based. Both Sega and NEC had far higher quality JRPG output than what was offer on the SNES, which was almost entirely SquareSoft's shovelware scraps. Everyone calls the SNES a "JRPG powerhouse" solely because it had quantity, speaking nothing for the quality of those games, which were largely lackluster.

Addendum, Phantasy Star IV is the 16-bit space JRPG you're looking for.

>Phantasy Star IV
>Lunar
>Shining Force
>Anearth Fantasy Stories
>Legend of Xanadu
>Emerald Dragon (PC Engine)
>Tengai Makyou
>Ys IV (PC Engine)
>Tenshi no Uta
>Neo Metal Fantasy
There was a litany of far superior JRPG's to choose from, especially beyond the confines of the SNES.

>more depth in combat
>better balance
>way better story
>music is not muffled MIDI shit
Phantasy Star is so far ahead of Dragon Quest, it's not even funny. Dragon Quest only really hit it's stride on the PlayStation, with the excellent DQ7.

OP was memed into playing yet another disappointing SNES "classic". In truth, the best JRPG experiences from the 16-bit era are to be found on alternative platforms. Phantasy Star IV, Shining Force II, Surging Aura, Pier Solar on the Mega Drive; Seiya Monogatari: Anearth Fantasy Stories, Neo Metal Fantasy, Tenshi no Uta II, Linda Cube, amongst many, MANY others on the PC Engine/Super CD-ROM2; are but a handful of the vastly better JRPGs that you won't find on Nintendo.

It's no Phantasy Star IV. And the far superior Chrono Cross basically makes it redundant, no point going back to it now.

>I guess SNES has those JRPGs that nofriend dorks seem to like
Even there, Mega Drive has pic related, Shining Force, Pier Solar, Surging Aura, not to mention a glut of strategy and CRPG games such as Pirates! Gold, Dune, Herzog Zwei, all surpassing the quality and depth of gameplay and presentation offered by anything on the SNES.
So what exactly is the SNES supposed to be so good at again?

There's nothing wrong with a good JRPG, pic related. The problem is nintendrones have the worst possible taste in JRPGs, touting the shittiest SNES JRPGs as "the best games ever", when they aren't even remotely close to the same level. This is because the shit SNES was so bottlenecked that the hardware was technically incapable of anything else, so the library was inundated with JRPGs, yet inexplicably it was still completely curbstomped by the Mega Drive and PC Engine in that genre, and the Amiga in CRPGs and strategy games.

The shit SNES didn't even have good JRPGs, that is a common misconception spread by nintendrones, Final Fantasy did not come to maturity until FF7, with SNES RPGs largely being incredibly shallow. The Mega Drive may not have had the sheer quantity, but the quality far surpassed what was on offer on the SNES. The PC Engine offered both quantity AND a much higher quality. The Amiga, additionally, had an incredible selection of RPGs far beyond the scope of depth of what the SNES was offering.

How does this JRPG rank among its SNES contenders? Besides Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy this JRPG is better imo and one of the best in general.
