Personally not my favorite FF It's story was a direct lift from VI, which was kind of disappointing, but FFVII isn't overrated, it deserves all the love it gets because it is a great game. I'd say its more over-exposed than anything, since you see it at the top of most "Best JRPG Lists" by people who know nothing about JRPGs, and because of Kingdom Hearts, Advent Children and Crisis Core it can seem a little overwhelming and the hype can destroy the game(like it can any other game). Also, you're still at the beginning, it gets so much better after Midgar.

Play the game. Everyone told me VIII was shit, and I played it and had a pretty ok time. Don't just listen to what people online say, play the game yourself.
