If you know the other general has specials meant to clear out troops opposed to direct attacks to the general, I order them to disperse to the sides and only have the general take the hit he/she was going to anyway. Never melee as you lose control. The chart in the manual is best , but note if the opposing general has any remaining troops, then you can just use ranged attacks to weaken the opposing general.

On that fateful day, walked into an Electronics Boutique looking for Sega Saturn games. They had very few games as the store was more focused on other platforms, for $30USD, I gambled and gave the game a shot. As a pleasant surprise I ended out loving the game with it quickly becoming one of my favorites for the system. The cool cover and case screenshots sold me on it; admittedly, Working Designs did put great effort in making eye catching packaging. Played through all the scenarios with each faction, but the Samurai/Ninja Izumo clan is the best.

It is simplistic, but I think it is pretty enjoyable. It was addictive fun to me, and I am glad I played though it a few times. It is made by Sega, and thus not for everyone.

You move generals and their armies from location to location. They heal (regain troops) at your own forts/castles. Combat is KOF style where you choose the order of the generals pre-match, in the match you can have the troops in formations and when the meter is full you can have a general unleash a special attack. At any point you can retreat/concede but if a general is felled or the whole army is lost the generals are captured. See the chart for ideal matchups, also consider the territory/terrain for bonuses. There is a timer/clock per cycle, so plan to have your armies station at a fort/castle to heal. On the diplomacy phase you can convince prisoner enemy generals to defect to your cause, reassign troop numbers/type if at a fort/castle, and get the status of the field.

It is actually a very simple game, but kind of addictive anyway. That's what I love about it.

It is actually simple which makes it work on the console. The main thing is the chart for which units beat the other (eventually you'll just make dragons for all since they top the tier list with no weak matchups), you'll quickly learn which generals are best to keep stocked with troops, and scout out who is coming/going. You'll fall into a groove with the game, its addictive gameplay will take over.

PS2, it has a better more modern anime look which looks like it was traced from premade 3D models by the best Chinese artists. While I prefer the look on the PS2 version with its contemporary anime look, the rougher designs of the Saturn versions still has its charms. What still stands the test of time is its simple yet weirdly addicting gameplay.

Izumo is the best and easiest for the skills of its generals and very strong samurai warriors. Pretty easy to defend too since there's only 2 paths. The samurai are only really bested by dragons which pretty much defeat everything. Working Designs added some shortcut buttons which are handy but not necessary, so they didn't adversely affect the game. It is still a great game to me for its simplicity, and fun enough I've beaten the game with every nation. It was a great cheap find in the back of Electronics Boutique, as they were starting to hide the Saturn games since everyone else wanted Playstation games.

Most definitely. Randomly picked up the first from the back of an Electronics Boutique because Saturn games were shoved to the back because no one wanted them, but for a discounted price of $25 I gave it a chance and I found the game extremely engrossing. While the game is pretty simple, it still melts away many hours, like Civilization, Geometry Wars 2, Culdcept, etc. where it would be day and the next thing you notice is that it is night, or vice versa. Saturn games are pretty hated on this board and Dragon Force is typically one of the games exemplifying one of the better titles the system has, and while it may not compare to a lot of other games in terms of depth, narrrative, or mechanics, I find it very fun.

Yeah the first got rereleased on a more popular system while the sequel was Saturn only. Also I the additional factor of a Working Designs translation helped the first become much more popular. I do think the mix and matching of unit/troop types is a necessary addition of depth.

For Dragon Force, I remember Working Designs added in shortcuts to the unused buttons on the Sega Saturn pad. I still went through the menus normally. Unlike many others of their releases, I don't think they messed with the balance too much.

Whoops, misfired my last reply >>3662691 to myself, and meant for >>3662640 ... It was unintentional to flood this thread, but it sure made the hours at work more entertaining for me.

It's pretty good, but there are a lot of great games, hard for me to pick one. I am thinking Keio 2 or Panzer Dragoon Saga are my choice favorites.

>>3661001
I actually thought Dragon Force (1) was a pretty simple game, somewhat straightforward deciding what matchups to go with in an encounter, formations to use, and timely retreats. I just find Dragon Force to be really addicting despite its simplistic mechanics.

Sorry, never played nor have Clockwork Knight 2.

They were one way that I can have the 'member berries. When no one else gave the series love, I will.
