This >>9422335 mostly. I loved mine when I was in college, many long hours of waiting between classes and boring night jobs were made vastly better because of it. That said, as noted you pretty much always had to have it plugged in, I stopped using batteries very soon. And the screen is awful, especially by today's standards. I took this photo as a prop basically a year or two before I sold mine, but pretty much since the PSP came out and was hacked for Genesis games easy on the go I never used it. I wonder occasionally where my old Nomad now lays, in a box or display shelf. The one thing I know for sure, it's not getting used regularly.

About two years ago. I took in a bunch of old stuff I don't actually use anymore to give it a new home and clear some space in mine. It went quite well, I made a little under $1200 which I'm sure I could gave got more on selling through ebay but it was worth the convenience and it was a fun trip.

The reality is that the Nomad sucks and was such a massive drain on batteries that it was really only useable plugged in. I eventually sold mine because I found I virtually always just used a PSP instead.

I can understand caring about carts and real hardware if you're also hooking it up to a CRT for old school feels, but playing portable it seems like it would be useless extra weight and power drain over just emulating.

I agree actually. It was pretty sweet in it's day if even for the novelty, but it's screen is shit, it's heavy and is only really "portable" if you blow tons of money on batteries. Hence you'll never see me post a more recent pic of it than that because even a PSP does a better job in every regard and after sitting mostly unused for a decade I sold it for a pretty penny to some clueless sap instead.

Gaiares is still a kick ass game though and that Castlevania level rocks so it's fun to post.

>Do you really have so little sentimentality that the sensation of popping a cart into a slot, clicking a physical switch and seeing a crt glow to life gives you no satisfaction at all?

Pretty much, but I have a low opinion of sentimentality and nostalgia in general. The old games I play I do so just because I like them, not to try and relive how I played them before. It's part of why I love the M2 3DS Genesis ports so much, it's games I love with a wonderful fresh coat of paint.

And yeah I'm in my 40's, it's not that I never experienced CRTs, I just never liked them.

I do still have a Nomad as well that I break on occasion, but it's more of a gimmick at this point. If I'm actually playing it's probably PSP or 3DS.

Well that's simple at least even if I think it's a shitty attitude to have. I don't understand the desire to keep old games as some sort of exclusive club. The more people into old games the better in my opinion.

Not all of us older posters are assholes. I just like talking about older games I enjoyed in my youth and finding "new" old ones. Personally I just miss the days on /vr/ when I never had to mention age at all. But this sort of thing >>3604209 is getting more and more common and it makes me sad for this place.

I did this, not all in one go but over the years until now all I have is a Nomad, a couple of Saturns and maybe a dozen games. I don't miss any of it at all, but I was never really into the collecting aspect and don't like CRT screens so for my tastes emulation is better.

>Im not spending 100+ dollars on a piece of tech from the last decade

No one is saying you have to. I bought a lot of that stuff new for way more than you're paying now, but I've gotten rid of almost all of it save for a few trinkets, because...

SPOILER ALERT
emulating is at least as good or better now than playing on original hardware ever was

If you want to collect old systems and games that's all well and good, knock your self out and enjoy your hobby. But understand you are a collector of things that are collector's items. And part of your hobby is now being into collector's items and that means dealing with a collector's market. Prices will fluctuate and generally anything good is going to rise over time and with popularity. Live with it or find another hobby. Whining about it won't help you a whole lot.

>You started this thread because you're in a rut and don't know where to go from here and yet you're defending the mindsets that are keeping you in the rut.

I didn't start this thread and I'm in no rut at all. I still love gaming maybe even more than I did in the old days. I think it's weird and sad some people have to go to such lengths to enjoy them.

The irony of the wine tasting is that's a little how I look at ROMs. There are tons of games that never got released outside of their regions or that I only ever read about in Newtype and the like. There are even more I never even heard of. Playing those is like being able to taste thousands of different wines at my leisure, discovering new tastes I never knew about.

Most of the rest of what you're saying doesn't really relate to me at all. Except the part about selling off my physical collection, but I did that many years ago with no regrets. Just keep a few cool nick nacks around and a Saturn because emulation is still shit, but I look forward to ditching it and the TV I keep around for it soon.

I sold a whole ton of my old stuff about six months ago. All I kept was a Saturn because emulation still sucks and a Nomad because it's cute. Got 800+ bucks and didn't regret it at all. But in my case I had moved to emulation 99% of the time years ago anyways and hadn't touched any of it in ages so there wasn't much to really miss.

Me too.

>and the emulated version rarely feels as good to play as it does on a real console.

I don't experience this though. Like I say, I think it feels just as good. Maybe it's that I'm old and too slow to notice the difference, or maybe it's there but so subtle I don't care. To each their own though, if you prefer hardware then rock on.

Nomad owner here. Back when it was new it was pretty amazing, but these days it's really more of a novelty. Battery life is so bad it's almost pointless to actually use it portable and it's not the most comfortable hand held out there. I almost never use it anymore over a PSP which is a much more convenient portable Genesis player. But if it's something you've wanted for a long time then I say go for it.

Also I can confirm that Virtua Racing works fine on one.

Some of my top Genesis games I'll recommend are

Ecco the Dolphin 1 & 2
Ranger X
Jurassic Park and Rampage Edition
Earthworm Jim 1 & 2
Phantasy Zone 1 & 2
Phantasy Star 2 - 4 (most dislike 3 though)
Beyond Oasis
Budokkan
Herzog Zwei
Space Harrier 1 & 2
Gaiares
Shining Force 1 & 2

There's lots more but that's a good list to start.

>As I grow older, I feel I'm slowly moving away from portable gaming.

I'm the polar opposite of this. More and more I play portable. Partly it's because I commute on trains a lot, but even at home I often prefer to play on a handheld than the big screen a lot of the time.

I do agree with you to a point on portable games usually being less robust than the full console games. But I also play almost all retro games portable now as well because I think a lot of them look great when shrunk down.

As for actual hardware, aside from a couple of Saturns the only retro stuff I have held onto this long is portable systems.

Sorry I don't take a million pictures. I'm also this guy, so you might get the same reaction again. Ironically it was Ranger X I was playing on PSP this morning that spurred me to make the thread.

Anyways, that's why I have these images and have posted them so often. Freaking love classic games shrunk down, I think it makes them look incredible. Thought I'd see how alone I am on it.

Nomad owner here. It's a neat novelty if you're a collector, but not a very good practical portable gaming machine.

With the battery pack attached it's very heavy and will eat through them super quickly. The other option is to use a power adapter which is what I usually do, but that makes it less portable. Also the screen is neat looking, but not of great quality.

Like I say if you're into collecting and want one as a curiosity item then it is a pretty neat little device and a fairly cheap addition to your collection.

But as a portable Genesis player, the PSP is better in every way. Better battery life, better and bigger screen and can hold the whole library on it's memory card. These days I virtually never use my Nomad anymore.

So take from that what you will.

Gongrats! I've had mine for many years and love it. Though honestly these days it's more of a novelty, if I want to play portable Genesis I'll just use a PSP which is way more practical. Still, the Nomad screen has a cool look to it and I usually have something plugged into mine.

Perfectly well enough for me. But then you're probably a CRT enthusiast as well.

Again, you can play your games however you want but the "you didn't really play it" line is laughable. And that's from someone with a fuckload of experience with both. :)

>inb4 emulators/roms. You guys can go shitpost somewhere else.

Not shitposting, but this is actually exactly why I moved to using emulators and roms primarily. I kept most of my handheld stuff including a Nomad and handful of my favorite Genesis games.

But other than that, I purge as much as I can and buy digitally whenever I can these days. I just want the games, I have no desire for the physical clutter that comes with them anymore.

Holy shit you're fucked in the head. I have no personal bias at all. I both emulate sometimes and play old physical carts sometimes. I keep a Nomad on my bedside table, but I also have a PSP loaded with roms.

I have zero jealousy at all towards collectors, a big part of the purpose of my encouraging people just getting into retro gaming to emulate is specifically to HELP people who collect by keeping prices down.

If someone wants to own Secret of Mana, that's great. But if someone doesn't care about owning it and just wants to experience the game, there's really no reason they should feel the need to buy it physically.
