I'm not sure. My dad had a genesis, I liked playing sonic on it, my brother had an n64 and I played a lot of Star Fox and Cruisin' USA.
Emulation was easy and free, older games were cheaper back then, and people were much more likely to give you old stuff. That's how I got my SNES.
I also like the simplicity and genuine nature of games. Everything now is just ultra epic ironic le cringe or try hard tough guy no bullshit lameness. Old games had that witty a natural charm in their writing but treated it as a supplement to the gameplay, not the main attraction. I feel like most older media have that sincerity that new media just doesnt have.
I just think it's a natural thing from liking video games in general. It's weird to me how it's weird for a movie guy to not watch old films but it's normal for a gamer to only play modern stuff.
Oh and the hardware is neat to me and it bothers me that ever since the tth gen consoles are fragile as shit.
