Hey OP, any games in particular you want to play? I've been on an autistic hardware binge for nearly a year now and I've determined the best way to pick your hardware and determine the cost is to pick the game or range of games you want to play. One of the most versatile setups is a Pentium MMX, something like a Sound Blaster Pro 2 or compatible, and a Cirrus Logic (high compatibility) or Tseng (decent compatibility but faster) video card. With register settings, a turbo switch hardwired to flip multipliers, and cache shenanigans you can hit all kinds of speeds from a 386 at ~16-33 MHz to full 233 MHz. If you want to play CGA games, there are homebrew XT machines that will work well. Maybe a Tandy for not-quite-EGA graphics? As mentioned, top of the line gear from eBay sellers will be brutal but if it's tested and working, well, that's the price you pay for security.

The Hellfire expansion isn't too bad either, but it's best played with some fan patches to correct a bunch of bugs and gameplay balance issues. For aesthetic purposes, a desk with a CRT like pic related is recommended for maximum comfiness.
