like half of Square RPGs on PS1 used pre-rendered backgrounds

many other developers tried to mimic the DKC style, but it looked goddawful most of the time. DKC worked fairly well because of the cartoon styled low-resolution sprites (hiding the limitations of the 3D models, like the body joints) and also because RARE used more natural-looking backgrounds instead of plastic-looking ones
