You can go pretty far in trying to find connections between FFIII and FFVIII.

Worlds are pretty similar.
FFIII's Hein(or Hyne as he is called in the fan-translated NES version of FFIII) might very well be the Hyne people talk about in FFVIII's world.
The hands of the clock in Ultimecia's castle has it's hands pointing at III and VIII


I doubt anyone here remembers but there was a guy who went by the name Logic? that actually came up with a pretty good attempt of connecting all the FF games few years ago (this was before Dissidia came out) and he had many good points about FFIII and FFVIII possibly sharing the same world but that just headcanon bullshit just like R=U is.

FFIII might also be prequel to FFVIII. At least the relative location of Temple of Time might finally give some kind of explanation to the origin of Ellone's powers.
