>There is no mana pool. There is no recharging mana except for resting at an Inn or using a Tent / Cottage. Early on you only get to use your Cure spell 3 or so times. Your Fire spell 3 or so times. Early on you do not have enough money to buy enough potions to keep up an extended romp through a dungeon trying to level up or just explore for loot.
>It doesn't make the game HARDER, it just makes it more TEDIOUS.
IMO you're right, limited spell uses is kind of a crappy game mechanic but it does impart some unique flavor to the game.
>So rather than fully exploring a dungeon in one go you might run in, find some loot, and run out, run back to an inn, rest, then repeat, exploring the dungeon bit by bit.
This is the kind of gameplay loop I would expect from an old RPG like this. The sense of getting slightly deeper into the unknown each time and then barely making it back to town to heal and save your progress is what adds tension to the game.

It's all 100% preference though. I don't really like JRPG gameplay but I like the visuals and stuff, so it sounds like I would have actually been better off with the GBA version (I played the PS1 version on pic related).
