Or the other way around, given the trapdoor object only opens up after being hit from below on PS1. Actually it makes a ton of sense this way. Look at the pic carefully: the Saturn version made the path longer so it wouldn't overlap into a new area. For PS1, it was probably supposed to be a tunnel leading to that square of the caverns that it's aligned with, but the developers probably thought it would be more prudent to move the exit further into the castle entrance, or they didn't think the design was interesting enough.
