>What does need to be solved is backtracking Metroidvanias.
That is easy to solve: You can only backtrack whenever you gotten a movement upgrade.
The reason its a problem is that in most of the bad "open 2d sidescrollers" you are always forced to backtrack trough the entire map at the least once, usually with the base moveset too.

I was playing through the new TNT and the level transduction was pretty neato
