I know most will disagree with me on this, but I seriously wish we would've gotten Sonic X-Treme because it looked like it was going to be fun. I suppose I just have low standards, then again I'm someone who managed to enjoy installments like Sonic 3D Blast quite a lot, and didn't mind others like Sonic Labyrinth and Sonic Blast all that much, but from the footage I've seen, which I don't know if it's from an actual build of Sonic X-Treme or not and would love to have that clarified if anyone knows, it looked fun to play, even if rough around the edges, if the development wasn't such a disaster and actually had the time and care needed by SEGA from the get go, this could've been good afterall:

I went ahead and played this, since the thread has gotten me curious, even though I was already familiar with this port's reputation. Just to give some context, Sonic The Hedgehog for the SEGA Genesis is one of the earliest video games I recall playing, and probably what made me fall in love with the hobby at all, it's still my favorite video game of all time because of it, even if I admit the successors did surpass it. Well, I began playing and was pleasantly surprised by the option to play with the spin dash, which is what I picked, then I noticed the screen crunch, but that's to be expected in a port... what wasn't expected is how they butchered the OST and, most of all, Sonic's control. I always struggle with describing bad control, but in this case it's mostly Sonic's momentum behaving in a broken manner, which I can't quite explain. I played up until Marble Zone, which I actually don't mind in the original, and stopped when I broke the special stage by accidentaly going off bounds when touching a wall, and by this point I couldn't be bothered anymore, SEGA completely blew it.

One more thing I've played recently, which was actually quite good, was the ROM Sonic Genesis for Master System, which pretty much replaced the sprites from the SEGA Master System port of Sonic The Hedgehog to look closer to the original's, also changing Bridge Zone into Marble Zone, Jungle Zone into Spring Yard Zone, and Sky Base Zone into Star Light Zone, but layouts are still the same, changes are mostly aesthetic. I was so impressed when playing this, it helps that I already like the core they built on top of, almost as much as the original, but having it look just like the original was simply phenomenal, and I definitely recommend it, it's a much better experience than this... thing, for the GBA.

I don't find a cartoony Sonic to be bad, afterall, when you look at Sonic's world, you have a main cast composed of anthropomorphic animals, and the only recurring human is called Dr. Eggman because his body's shaped like an egg, it's a cartoon, always have been and always will be, I acknowledge that... my issue with something like Lost World, which is the specific installment I mentioned, is that it went too far in that direction to me, in a way that it almost became a caricature of itself and classic Sonic, while I feel that the best visual direction for Sonic, the one SEGA should strive for more often, is when they make it look sort of like a Pixar movie, which is what Sonic Unleashed did, and it was beautiful to me, the cartoony humans mixed with stunning environments, but then again, we all have our personal preferences for what we want Sonic to be, and that obviously goes for aesthetics aswell. I don't know what direction Sonic Frontiers will take, but it seems to be going in the Sonic Unleashed route, which I've been really longing for.

I've decided to replay Sonic & Tails thanks to this thread, since I have fond memories with it and it's been a while since the last time I gave it a playthrough, it was never my favorite Sonic of all, but one I considered to be excelent nonetheless. One thing that needs to be cleared up right away is that if you decide to not go for 100% completion, or simply prefer to play with Tails, which can't go for 100% for some reason, your experience will be relatively comfortable, perhaps too comfortable, levels can end in about 30 seconds, even the last few levels, and you're given plenty of rings to make sure you can reach the special stages. As a traditional Sonic experience, it still functions, Sonic has all moves you'd expect him to have, and Tails too, but level design is clearly made with 100% completion in mind, and that's how you'd get the most out of Sonic & Tails. When you play as Sonic and go for 100%, that's when it opens up, since you now have to explore the levels to get 100 rings, to have a shot at the interesting and well made special stages, and while I don't find ring collecting to be Sonic's strong point, it still works, especially since these levels are designed in a way that's fun to explore, and Sonic controls well while doing so.
