Arch Viles are extremely great ways to tilt the entire balance of any encounter on its head. Imagine a room full of shotgunners and zombiemen opening, and then midway through it, an Archvile and two cacodemons pop out. Now EVERYTHING has fucking changed.

The thing about Doom theory regarding items and monsters is that it's honestly really malleable based on which monster comes out at what point, at what distance, and so on. The best example of a sandbox in Doom imo is Plutonia, because the monsters are used in so many different roles to the point the wad almost feels like a puzzle rather than combat, and I fucking love it for that. If you want another one to check out, FreeDoom's latest versions have some very run of the mill encounters, but their older versions, specifically Map 10 in version 0.6.4, have some very painful ones that showcase the best and worst places to use monsters.
