As I said in the OP, it looks like a silly joke at first, but when you take a good look at it you realize it's not.

The symbolism is not subtle at all. Every step of the way throughout the game seems to have a quite clear symbolic significance, and most of it dovetails quite explicitly with common masonic themes.
