Tbf Mario did have an edgy "tude-dude" redesign in Mario Super Strikers. Just like Sonic with Sonic Adventures.

It just wasn't made the "norm" or "canon" by Nintendo.

It looks like a "what up fellow kids" version of Mario.

pci-related is the "edgiest" Nintendo tried to make Mario officially and it worked because they kept it in context by making him a soccer player to appeal to sports-fans
