Did you notice the similarity to the N64 controller?

It's been tried before and was very under utilized. A row of buttons or the standard diamond shape will always have more use, and with the diamond it can basically function as a second dpad

This thread is about any failed peripheral.

Example, everyone gives shit to the Virtual Boy, but nobody acknowledges the flying spaghetti monster the controller was.

It's pretty symmetric though, but if we talk symmetric controllers, this one wins hands down.

Doesn't turn on? Or will not display?

Try to determine the issue. It is a very common problem in Virtual Boy systems for the adhesive that holds the eyepieces together to begin to lose integrity, resulting in one blank screen or both going out.

There is a method of putting your system in the oven to repair this. I'm not kidding, ask the Assemblers. But determine where the fault in your VB is. The fix could be pretty simple.

It is pretty symmetrical though, the C buttons act as a d-pad as well, which is why some games let you decide whether you want to play with the left or right position.

I have to put a few books under the VB to be able to play it comfortably, otherwise I have to make an awkward position to play it. Or just do the lay on bed and balance VB on my head position.

And yeah, the VB is a very interesting piece of history, Nintendo's biggest failure for sure, and Yokoi's last creation within the company (sans the GB Pocket, which was a "farewell" gift from him to Nintendo).
The 3D effect on it is pretty good, most of the games on it range from decent to great, but it has a lot of factors against it, like the red monochrome screens, I personally don't mind it, in fact I love it, but many people find it too weird, I guess.
Then yeah, the fact it's neither a portable device, nor a home console.
It was also marketed as a "virtual reality" system, but most of the games are 2D (with a 3D effect for added layers), the only first person shooter on it is Innsmouth no yakata and it was only released in Japan.

The VB is just too weird, I can see why it couldn't make it. But personally it fascinates me.

What's better than a d-pad? Two d-pads.

It's alright, I bought it a few years ago for cheap because I wanted to check it out. It's actually a curious little thing with some really good games on it (Wario Land, Teleroboxer, Jack Bros, etc).
The catalogue is really small, and using the VB is kind of awkward, but the 3D effect is actually impressive (its much deeper than the 3DS, and this was in 1995), and the VB controller has probably one of my favorite d-pads ever (well, let's say my 2 favorite d-pads ever).

I'm actually sorry you never got to at least try it once.

Hey! If you're looking for some modding and repair stuff to add to the wiki, I may be able to help.

I've done a bunch of system repairs as well as just taking things apart and taking pictures to catalog what's there to be seen.

But more on point, I've got experience with the Virtual Boy oven repair method for a malfunctioning LED display. I'll make a note to add some of that if you haven't gotten it already.
