You will certainly not regret trying it out this weekend. Battles are a million times more interesting. Planet development and research are less fun imo, but it is overall still outstanding and addictive.

In MoO1 I ignore the guardian until I hace auto blasters and high energy focus. It is just important that enemy does not get to it first, because death ray. I prefer playing Darloks on impossible in a crowded galaxy. Steal from everyone, focus on computer tech research and feed the opponents some useless tech to keep them from hating you all at once. Check out who forms pacts and alliances with whom and frame accordingly to make them break up their treaties. Kill off your immediate neighbours. It might need a little bit of save and reload to really get into it. Sometimes getting caught spying means game over and the only way to save the game is to reload and hide the spies for a while.
