Doing it "right" is as much a matter of artistic sensibility as it is of technology. The Doom neural upscale project looks better than any previous attempt partly because they recognised the need for a *downscaling* step to restore pixelation.

Not always, although it does take a lot of work and processing power (so pre-processing is a must) to get good results. The cloud neural upscaling work that's been done on Doom textures / sprites borders on black magic, monsters have new details that are indistinguishable from if id originally took the model photos at a higher resolution. The first time I played a WAD using this, I had to stop at one point to admire how beautiful the *floor* was.
