You could argue that augmentation development would never stop on a military level, but we know they focused on nanoaugmentations and physiopharmaceutical augs.

The original Deus Ex was going to be much closer to the newer aesthetic (according to the concept artworks at least), but as you can imagine, hardware limitations made it impossible to use such complex designs.

Deus Ex ended up using a Blade Runner/Matrix cyberpunk aesthetic, while HR and MD clearly went for a Ghost in the Shell look.
I'm not saying the original isn't superior or anything, but despite the fact the newer ones tried to do "their own thing", they weren't that inconsistent with the original lore as it seems. It's pretty clear Eidos devs were at least fans of the original, as the newer trilogy was going to be pretty much a direct prequel of the first game. Look at Mankind Divided: Jensen is working for the soon-to-be-UNATCO (his actual boss is even the same guy JC was working for), and the whole game is clearly a set up for a larger Illuminati-focused plot. It was probably going to be "How Bob Page and Majestic 12 took over the Illuminati"; shame we'll never get that because of Square jewness and capeshit easy money
