Standard levels and experience in JRPG's is some of the safest, and most dull ways, for character progression. I prefer slightly different to even radically different variations. It is probably why I love the SaGa series so much. Robots don't get strong at all from fighting, you have to equip items to them for them to gain any stats at all. You don't need to grind a robot, once that item is there they get their full stat boost. Monsters need to eat the meat of other monsters so they are able to transform into a different monster (if it is a stronger or weaker monster that all depends upon the monster meat and the current monster you have), humans in the original completely item dependent since they needed stat raising potions to become stronger then in later games they naturally became stronger in battle through the actions they took. Then you have the ways the races learned skills, especially in later games, with humans learning physical attacks mid battle so you can literally learn a new powerful skill right in the middle of a boss fight, robots needing to download skills from other robots you defeat, and monsters gaining their skill sets from their transformations.

Other games like Hybrid Heaven with a natural growth system along with levels as well so you can raise offensive levels and also raise the offense of your left arm, or your left leg, or your head, and so on, and learning skills from enemies has a risk versus reward factor since more powerful skills will put you at much more of a risk in dying.

Personally I don't like it when they do orchestrated remixes of battle themes. It completely misses the mark of how the music really felt. It needs to be sharper, bolder.

Personally this is my favorite remix of Save the World: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhSXvwQB2RM

Of course, they were also my first RPG's as well.
