I adore the Sonic Chaos/Sonic & Tails one, I like the western one too... but the JP one might be my favorite artwork for Sonic and Tails, it's nice.

Sonic Chaos has decent artwork... but Sonic & Tails has my favorite Sonic artwork in any of its covers, both Sonic and Tails look really great.

I think that the box art for Sonic & Tails, known as Sonic Chaos outside of JP, is probably my favorite artwork for classic Sonic and classic Tails, love it!

I've finished both Sonic & Tails and Sonic & Tails 2 recently, and I have to say... they feel like a lot of missed potential, because of one change they've made from the previous duology... the emeralds. In Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, you just found them in the levels, which was fun as it gave the player a good incentive to explore... but in this duology we had the return of special stages for the emeralds... I don't mind these much, but after getting used to not having them in the previous titles, it's not an exciting thing to see them back, especially since they're not much fun, especially on Sonic & Tails 2... also, Sonic & Tails asks you to get 100 rings to just access the special stages, this means levels are filled with rings, which makes them quite an easy time if you're just playing from point A to B, and levels are way too short... also, nothing gets my blood boiling more than getting around 90 rings only to get hit. Sonic & Tails 2 is probably a bit better in regards to accessing them, but the level design in them, especially special stage 3 and 5... I didn't enjoy playing it, at all, and it's a shame, since these titles feel a lot more like the Genesis titles, with a spin dash and even super peel out, a lot more slopes too... but level design and special stages make them a lot worse. I don't want to give people the wrong idea though, both are good video games, but could've been a lot more, still worth a playthrough though.

Sonic & Tails (JP) on Game Gear is probably my favorite Sonic box art, Sonic just looks perfect here, it's the classic design at its best.

Sonic Chaos/Sonic & Tails (Game Gear/Master System). I still find it to be a decent experience on the whole, but I definitely remembered it being a lot better than it actually was. I'd say both it's graphics and OST are excelent, so in these regards it's does its job, and it terms of control it's where Sonic feels best on 8-Bit platforms to me, even better than its sequel. Where quality dives is the level design, which is kind of a huge issue. I'd say most levels end in 30 seconds or less if you're not going for the Chaos Emeralds, so the experience feels downright shallow in an Any% run. Even the search for the Chaos Emeralds doesn't save it, you have to get 100 rings, there's an incentive to explore and that's fine, but you still lose all rings in a single hit, so you start playing it cautiously and barely go fast because of it. I don't think the emphasis on ring collecting was the right way to go about exploration.

I wouldn't say Sonic & Tails/Sonic Chaos was good enough to be considered the peak Sonic experience, regardless of it being the Master System or Game Gear version. though I do prefer the handheld's version simply due to the screen resolution, which makes things slighty harder and more interesting to get by. Overall it reminds me a lot of Sonic CD, where the idea isn't to just get to the end of each level, but to explore them, the problem is that Sonic CD still worked well enough if you just wanted a standard Sonic experience, while here the levels are over in less than 30 seconds if you play it this way, also you're expected to explore not to find generators or anything like that, instead you have to find rings so you can get 100 of them, which will take you to the special stage, so you can get the emerald. I'd say that going for the emeralds and conquering the special stages is actually interesting and makes this worth it, but overall having ring collecting as your main objective doesn't feel much like Sonic, and level design overall suffers because of it. Sonic & Tails/Sonic Chaos is an excelent time, but not peak Sonic.
