I had to use the power of imagination. Blockbuster was always out of the good games anyway and my neighborhood was too poor to even do the intended NeoGeo rentals.

Had subscriptions to Nintendo Power, EGM, Super Gaming, GameFan, and Gamer's Republic from the late 80s to late 90s. Read the rest on the magazine shelves. The subscriptions tended to be less than the cost of 2 issues for a whole year thus it was worth the price.

I read them all. I would often visit the newsstands and read them before putting them back. Going to malls, grocers, big box stores, it was a great way to soak up the free air conditioning and imagine of all these games which were just too expensive to have. The images from the magazines with the power of imagination was the way to cope in my day.

Magazines were pretty much how I cope with being poor and unable to afford the games. Going to the grocers, taking in the air conditioning, reading the magazines, then putting it back on the shelf to imagine how the games were my old days, which I wouldn't call good.

As for scans, most of the ones I got are from retromags.

Back then, I did not know where to get ROMs. Besides, I don't think my 286-12 which I got a bit later, would have been able to handle NES emulation. While it was able to handle Wing Commander 2, a near full screen Wolfenstien 3D, and a lot of point & click adventure games, I think NES emulation was still in its infancy and very inaccurate.

Thanks, I think you're just encouraging my hoarding.

Yeah, the Japanese games they'd show off in their international sections of EGM got me to subscribe to their quarterly spinoff magazine all about Japanese games. Unfortunately, it ran for its 4 issues with the last one just a copy of what was already in their main magazine's international section plus a couple extra pages in new content. I was not happy at the time, as I did like the first 3 issues here.

I do remember Playstation Underground discs which had demos and videos.
