I think the 1995 movie, Stand Alone Complex and Second Gig have a lot of substance even if it’s different. I personally think the 1995 film is the best representation of the series, but I think to generalize the anime after the movie as shallow is a little unfair. I thought this exact same way around 15 years ago until I actually sat down and watched it. I thoroughly enjoyed the two seasons of the anime and sort of felt silly for stereotyping it. Now, everything after that? Ya, I agree.. most of it is cash grab or totally misses the point of what make the series special.
