Protip go in this order

Pochi: collect the power knuckle, glove, and teleport crystal. the boss is easy and if you die then you fucked up bad.
Xemn: collect the mattock, power boots, and rod. boss dies in 2 seconds with the power knuckle.
Lyll: collect the wings and buy the shield. for the boss equip the shield and it can't hurt you.
Meyna: buy the magic keystick since her area has a shit ton of doors. this is the only difficult boss in the game, so attack him from above with the power knuckle equipped and have a magic potion in reserve in case you run out.

the more confusing and frustrating to beginners, the better.

Actually I'm the opposite. I usually go in to every old RPG, J or not, expecting at least one absolute cunt dungeon designed to pad the game or just show complete contempt for the player.

Incidentally here's one of my all time favourite maps.

It dawned to me that there has been a whole genre of exploratory 2D RPGs in Japan well before Metroid.

Would you guys lend your knowledge and help me make a list of these games? I'm especially interested in the older ones, as I enjoy the aesthetic of early home computer games.
