Also, the first time my older brother and I played through the game, he named Sabin after me. So that helped me get attached to him I think.

Yep, same situation.

Sabin falls under that category for me. In all the parts where you have to pick specific dudes, there's no fucking way I'm benching the guy that can do multitarget attacks for free. Same with Edgar too. The Figaro Brothers are just way too good.
