I play with the Quakespasm sourceport, and it has gamepad support, I use a pic related with my mouse. Very comfortable.

I don't think base Quake 1 is hard enough to make a difference, really. Remember that freelook was off by default on release, because Romero figured most people wouldn't be ready for a feature like that at the time.

I can see why you arrive at that conclusion. I've played PC and consoles all my life, but in later years, as controllers and control schemes have improved, I've found that I far prefer the comfort and smoothness of analog stick movement over WASD, however, even though I'm good at aiming with an analog stick, a mouse is still vastly superior for that.

I use this + a mouse for FPS games (old and new).

For emulating old console and handheld games, I use a cheap generic dualshock clone with a turbo toggle. It's not amazing, but it's also not bad, for the price, it's certainly been worth it, it's better than using a keyboard (also I can lean back from my laptop in a comfy position).

I think for the PS4 it kind of has to, since it has to have a compatible touch-pad like the DS4

The same concept for the PS3 (and PC), looks like this. Personally, I think it's quite comfy, and I like having mouselook+analog movement for games (though it's not a perfect product).
I've never used a PS4, so I have no idea of that setup is clumsy or awkward for most games (like if the touch pad is difficult to handle in this config, or if it's oddly balanced), but the idea of half a gamepad in your off-hand does make sense and it does work.
