Yeah I think most top-down sword combat games go the ARPG route, heavier on cutscenes and a magic/stat system. At least, when I look back at games made during the 90s 2D era that's what I tend to see. Chrystalis, the Quintet trilogy, Seiken Densetsu, Alundra, and so on. I remember playing Lagoon and thinking it was kind of terrible. There are a lot I haven't played (Brain Lord, Ys, everything on Sega systems).

Saved a few while lurking and was wondering if there were any others floating around, especially genre-specific like pic related.

Zelda is an outlier and is the best on the SNES largely because it is does not try at all to be an RPG.

People who insist that OoT was the better game weren't alive when LttP was originally released.

Did a more updated version of this list ever get made? I remember it was a work in progress before the mods killed the board.

also fwiw I don't sperg out about casually inclusive use of the term. For example you won't see me arguing about the inclusion of Legend of Zelda on pic-related arpg list. Sometimes a broader use of the term makes sense, sometimes it doesn't. But if you voluntarily enter a discussion about accurate classification and semantics, don't complain about pedantry.

Eventually I might do that, but it is already a lot of work finding new games and a proper picture for each one of them, so it will take some time to grade the games properly (and yet no one will agree with the result).

I never played the game when it was released (In fact I hadn't been born yet). Taking into consideration the limitations of the nes and the year it was released, I think the game is quite polished, and you can see that specially if you compare it with games of the same period. It lacks of some features that would make the game more enjoyable, but the game is still fun and engaging.

The small details are what counts: monster design, hidden secrets, the charming progression walls (wands, bombs, brazalets), even the music.

Remember, the only zelda good wihout having a famous dad.

Most of these are unpopular.
