This occupied a fair bit of my teenage years. I also have the one Atari collection with Joust 2 on it. Joust 2 didn't get very many home ports.

We got something. I don't remember what it's called, but it's a compilation of various 3D Ages games, like that awful remake of Golden Axe. Still a lot of good games on that disc.

Plenty of timeless arcade-style games like Centipede and Millipede. But these games didn't necessarily have endings, and many used single-screen action. The only real objective in these games were to try and obtain a high score so you could place on the leaderboard. A lot of these games have been given enhanced ports on later consoles, especially through services like Xbox Live Arcade. Also plenty of emulated arcade collections like pic related.

Did anyone else here play any of the Atari collections? I still own pic related. I got it mostly for Gauntlet and Millipede.

I still play pic related, but I've heard the emulation quality isn't that great. For instance, I think the levels in Gauntlet are supposed to be randomly generated. Except they're not.

Would be nice to find a site that offers technical coverage on various emulated collections like these.

These compilations never tend to be perfect, usually because I imagine the developer wants to cash in by releasing the games across multiple volumes.

I'm more upset that second-generation arcade compilations are usually so lightweight by comparison. The Atari collection series on PS1 contained maybe 6 games per volume at most, even though every volume could fit onto a single disc. Each volume also retailed at US $45.

Does /vr/ bother with any emulated console arcade collections, or do you guys prefer your own emulation setup on your computers?

I've heard some bad things about the quality of emulation in some of these collections, namely that RNG might be fucked up. For instance, I think Gauntlet's code is supposed to generate levels in a random order, but the levels occur in a deterministic order on the collections instead.

Pic related is the only one for the PS1 I really cared for. If you like Centipede, the arcade version of it is included in Centipede 3D for PS1. Centipede 3D is pretty enjoyable, so I'd rather keep that around than another Atari compilation that I may not actually play.

Gauntlet II is one of the more difficult games to come across. I didn't see any emulated ports until it was included with one of the Midway Treasure compilations for PS2, Xbox and GC.

Some of these may not be entirely obscure, but I never seem them mentioned:

Chocobo's Dungeon 2 - A roguelike(-lite) with various references to the Final Fantasy series. Don't let the cutesy graphics and characters throw you off, though. This is a very challenging game with a lot of depth - equipment customization, farming for items, etc.

Crusaders of Might and Magic - I've never played any of the M&M strategy titles, but apparently this is a spin-off of the series. It's your typical action RPG fare. Third-person exploration, lots of freedom, experience level system, etc. Quite difficult. Probably one of the closest titles the PS1 got to Dark Souls.

If you like shmups, Viewpoint and Starfighter Sanvein are often overlooked. Starfighter Sanvein is difficult to sum up. Each stage consists of a small grid (sort of like a coliseum) where you have to shoot down enemy ships in a limited amount a time, then the game moves you into the next grid. It's very fast-paced.

RPG Maker - A toolkit for designing your own RPGs, which you then save to a memory card. Similar to the PC versions.

Gauntlet Legends - Probably not the best port of this game, but if you lack access to a DC or N64, it may be worth investing in.

Arcade's Greatest HIts: The Atari Collection 2 - Gauntlet, Paperboy, Millipede and a few other arcade classics on one collection. Lets you adjust difficulty levels and backup your high scores to a memory card. Probably has the best selection out of all the arcade shovelware that was ported to the PS1.

Centipede (3D) - A 3D rendition of Centipede with an actual story mode, and includes an emulated version of the arcade classic on the disc as well. The gameplay alternates between platforming and shooting sections. Quite fun, but cheap difficulty.

Centipede is the earliest video game I can still enjoy. There are a handful of other titles around the same generation that I'll play on occasion: Gauntlet, Gauntlet II, Millipede, Paperboy, Rampage, Joust 2, Galaga, Lady Bug, and maybe a few others I can't think of off hand.

I actually buy emulated arcade compilations sometimes. I still play pic related to beat my previous high scores. I never cared for the really early console ports, though. Everything ported to 2600 was substandard at best.

Gauntlet, Millipede and Paperboy all on one collection. Probably one of the more notable arcade compilations for the PS1.

Thankfully they thought to include the ability to save high scores and settings to the memory card.
