This. Zoomers don't remember but Sega got a head start on the 16-bit era and when all you'd ever seen was 8-bit games seeing a commercial with Sonic the Hedgehog and Moonwalker was like seeing movies go from black and white to color.

And it was important because Nintendo was almost to the point where it was becoming synonymous with video game consoles. A game system *was* a Nintendo, so Sega really needed to get people's attention and let them know "no, we are not Nintendo, we are better than Nintendo and you want our console, not theirs." This ad campaign was brilliant and it worked.
