As far as i've been learning, you first off need to get used into holding the controller differently so that you can pull off the commonly used techs easier.
You essentially rest the controller on your lap or desk, hold the left side of the controller like you normally would, and then have the index of your right hand rest in-between the A and B buttons, with the middle finger resting in the middle of the C buttons (that's at least how i go about it, other people who play the game far more seriously may place their fingers differently).
Secondly, you need to know about the more advanced techs, such as dash jumping (holding down + left/right on the d-pad and then pressing A) and boost grabbing (an exploit where you can gain height and/or prolong your speed, where you have to press C-Up and B on a rapid rhythm [It's important that you always have to start the tech with C-Up], almost as if you're pressing both buttons at the same time, it's something you really need to experiment and adjust by yourself until you find the perfect rhythm to do it, i suggest you do it on 1-1).
