Have fun OP. Be warned Ultima IV can be a bit grindy to complete. 5 and 6 have generally held up a bit better in terms of design although neither are as special or revolutionary as 4. 7's great (other than the fucking inventory management) but it's almost like its own thing and quite different from 4-6. Also I'd highly recommend Ultima Underworld when you want to start exploring first person crpgs. It's one of, if not the, first, true, real-time 3D rpgs and it's held up surprisingly well. Far better than the early Elder Scrolls games it inspired. Although to fully 'get' the impact the game had you might want to play Dungeon Master or Eye of the Beholder first.

He's wrong but not entirely. Wolfenstein 3D was at least partially inspired by an early demo of Ultima Underworld and it arguably led Id to create their own first person games with texture mapped walls. Accounts vary as to when this happened, Masters of Doom says that Paul Neurath called John Romero - told him about Underworld, other accounts have either Romero or Carmack seeing a demo in 1990. But either way there's a bit of truth to it. However by the time Id were making Doom the Ultima Underworld influence was pretty much non-existent. Both Underworld and Wolf 3D were still based on tiles for map design which Doom completely did away with. Looking Glass's follow-up, System Shock was still using tiles as a basis for creating their 3D maps. And that's just one example.
