Nowadays Quake 3 Arena and Quake 2 are what I would call 'comfort games'.
I played nothing but UT99 for six years straight and I still go back to it, but at this point in my life I like how simple Quake 3 is; whenever I want to unwind I just jump into a map with some bots and that's enough for me because it feels fresh and entertaining to rely on my movement and how I use weapons to defend myself. It's fast-paced and a good way to burn 15 to 30 minutes of free time.
Quake 2 is there because of tradition. It was the first FPS I ever played and I like to go back to it at least once a year, usually around New Year's Eve. I know it's not the best one out there but I enjoy powering through the SP campaing and the expansions on Hard+ in a week or two.

TRPGs are a great choice. I played the everloving shit out of FFT at a point where I emulated a lot of PS1 games. I should pick a romhack and play it again.

Is there a way to play Quake 2 multiplayer without respawns, similar to survival in Doom?
