Now that gaming is old enough, it's time to define what good game design is. And I can think of no better corner of the internet to ask than this board.

What does good game design mean to you?

Hey guys I’m curious, what’s the speed run for 1-1?

I saw some site said it was just over 10 seconds but no video to prove it. Another said about over thirty seconds with video to back it up.

So which is it? And how can you beat 1-1 in ten seconds?

"Childlike wonder" is playing Super Mario Bros and being silently guided through the mechanics though simple, deliberately designed levels that give clear responses from trying things out.

"Childlike wonder" is looking at a Pac Man level and instinctively understanding the core concept "eat the dots and run away from the ghosts chasing you," but letting you discover what power pellets do.

"Childlike wonder" is a product of a game knowing what to say and what not to, so that the player quickly grasps the fundamentals needed to win but can safely experiment to discover the individual elements that aren't intuitive to grasp.

NiGHTS is a ton of unintuitive shit thrown at once with no way to isolate what each element does on its own along with a grading scale that tells you "you're doing it wrong" with no way to immediately understand what "doing it right" is. I still think it's a really good game, but as >>4530607 mentions, it takes outside explanation to meaningfully understand it.

Is it even possible to beat any Mario game without a guide?

Pic related, I'm stuck in this. First off why can I only move left and right lol?

Also I have no idea how to trigger a dialogue option with this NPC. Every time I try to talk to it I just die. Help please?
