I remember in Serpent Isle there was a woman who had sex spells like ones that makes clothes disappear, but I don't remember if that was one in the book to use.

I had no idea. While I have noticed him hanging out in the courtyard/central garden fountain often, I never suspected such an event.

I have not played the SNES version. I honestly got it because I love the cover to the game. One of the things I loved about getting The Black Gate on PC was that the manual was an actual book in the game. While in-game the Fellowship book had the first few pages, the one in the box continues on about the world like the runes, magic, and bestiary. So the experience was enhanced with items outside of the game as well as the game itself. It also included a cloth map and oddly shaped marble intended to be the mystic orb, both of which were in the intro. Later editions supposedly had a fellowship coin or medallion instead of the mystic orb. I originally played the game on a 386DX-40 at the same time I was experiencing US SNES Final Fantasy 2 so I really grew to love RPGs. I no longer have a 386DX-40, but instead a 486DX4-100 and a Pentium MMX 166 which are a bit past the time period.

Back then, for me, it was the VGA graphics and SoundBlaster 2.0 music/sound. Someone lent 7 to me and I got addicted to it and Final Fantasy 2(4 easy) at the same time. I liked exploring with full freedom and finding things. There were interesting characters and side stories around.

I liked both U7 games and the Zelda games. I didn't think of them as competition back then, just different games that offered different experiences.

A villain which is not defeated at the end and is talking to you in your head with a Texan drawl. Also the music was pretty cool too: https://youtu.be/yiQklB7DDqI

Just looking at that map, I remember so much. Spoilers are everywhere.

I remember playing through Oblivion and thought "this is like a 3D Ultima 7".

I remember thinking it was a bit of a deconstruction of typical RPGs. Since you were dumped into the world, and as the Avatar, you do not master the elements. Only earth was gained after horrible atrocities were committed defying the morals of the Avatar. Wind, water, and fire would not be mastered, in fact water and fire could never be attained and the game ended pretty much with the hero character going "fuck this world, I'm leaving". I have not played 9 but 8 was pretty interesting despite being nowhere near as great as the 7s.

I remember playing The Black Gate and US Final Fantasy 2 at the same time back then. Between those two games, they got me into the RPG genre. I still think Chrono Trigger is my favorite RPG, but the times I spent playing Ultima 7 games on my 386-40 were special.

It fell out of favor with its audience and was unable to compete with all the great FPS and RTS games out. I guess the Elder Scrolls games are the closest facsimile, but Origin may make a comeback now that it is bundled with Xbox Game Pass. I hope that means they put in the work to make a good new entry.

It's sort of an open world kind of game like Elder Scrolls Oblivion. I started with 7: Black Gate and alongside Final Fantasy 2 (US/JP4easy) they got me really into the RPG genre. You got it for a lot cheaper than I did. In 7, they tried to make almost the whole game mostly controllable via the mouse only, but the shortcuts on keyboard definitely make the task easier. Right mouse button moves you, left mouse selects (show name of item/person) double left click opens/uses or engage conversation. You can also left drag and drop items to move/place them. I have not played 4 nor any other Ultima aside from the ones pictured here, but I really like what I have played.

That sounds so off to me. Back then I used a plain Sound Blaster (I think 2.0), for the game and that is how I remember it, but as I have learned on this board, no one likes Yamaha sounds so just to me the the music is better that way. I guess everyone else is more used to Roland sounds, and that's probably how the rich and young experienced it, but when you're poor you settle for things like Yamaha sounds and AMD parts like I did. Installing the Forge of Virtue added a new event/area to t he game and it was cool, while I found 7 part 2: Serpent Isle way more restrictive and linear, and more buggy, it was still pretty good. Part 2 did lack the large party and there were so many ways I could have imagined it to be more open, but it was a step up in visuals as I thought Fawn was a very pretty city and the inventory screens had the characters actually wear the items.

I believe you are referring to Iolo, which I think is an old companion from prior games. I made it through 7 without much prior knowledge, and I think 7 part 2 covers some history in 3. The documentation of the games are really cool as they are written as if by characters in the games and give a good background to the game. Even the cluebooks were written that way too, with cool illustrations.

Pretty much >>6471857 it is chaos. You can specify "attack strongest", "attack weakest", per non-Avatar character. I tend to set the characters I want to gain exp for training to attacking and all others to run away. Do consider where combat occurs when you unleash chaos with "C", as your companions will path into hazards for no reason (like stepping onto caltrops or the poisonous areas of swamps) even when running away. I do not recommend arrows/bolts/ranged attacks as there can be friendly fire.

Fortunately, I don't think the games emphasizes combat as much as interactions so it is not a big concern.
