I'd say an interactive medium like games cries out for a museum where you can play the displays. However, some games simply cannot be kept in a bottle. Ultima Online can never really be the same experience without the player base, Point and Click games lose their challenge when you can look up what to do on your smart phone, and many games have unique interfaces that cannot be easily simulated.

The strange, sad, and wonderful thing about games is that they are entirely experiences of their era. As a game passes the 20 or 30 year mark it falls into near total obscurity if it doesn't have a modern franchise built around it raping it to death. So while we might fantasize about this gaming museum, it won't truly capture our feelings about gaming, nor really reflect the games themselves.

Though I suppose you could say the same about most arts.

Yes, but games like Earthbound and Secret of Mana (hardly rare) are ridiculously over priced and have stayed that way for decades because of the reseller market. I really don't see how they make money off the system of inflating game prices by buying expensive games.
