I think all of this could have some more sinister implications had this game been made by Westerners.

A bunch of Japanese artists were mesmerized by some frankly interesting design elements and replicated them simply because they look cool from the PoV of being outsiders raised in a radically different cultural context.

Its basically like elementary school kids drawing this bizarre symbol, or Asian Engrish t-shirts, except someone on the art team did their homework to make the game feel more authentically "magical". That's basically the whole gist of the well-researched Megami Tensei games as well, artists going the extra mile and drawing from mythology encyclopedias for that additional 'cool' factor rather than pushing some agenda their entire nation has no stake in.
