Personally, I think the Metroid series had the greatest 2D to 3D transition of any game series ever with Metroid Prime. Better than Mega Man to Mega Man Legends, better than Super Mario World to Super Mario 64, better than Link to the Past to Ocarina of Time. It kept the esthetics of exploration and isolation completely intact and as the main focus of the game. Combat wasn't the main focus of the game except for boss fights. Almost all the classic powerups showed up and were useful, with the remainder showing up in the sequel. I don't understand why some people complain about the first person camera. The perspective itself doesn't define the genre of a game, the esthetics do, and Prime 1 and 2 nail it, with Prime 3 doing an ok job at it. They're still Action-Adventure games.

I believe the major reason why there wasn't an N64 release, besides Gunpei being dead and Japan themselves not really liking Metroid, was that they didn't think they could pull off a good 2D to 3D transition on the 64.

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes is my favorite Metroid game after Super, Fusion, and Zero Mission.
