I'm a huge fan of the Zelda series and Zelda 2 is my favorite of the series. Sure, it's different in terms of gameplay and focus, but it's a great challenge.

I kinda wish that Link Between Worlds had the prescience to put a Zelda 2 style gameplay into the 2D aspect of the game. It would've been brilliant.

Go back to it. If you can beat Zelda II you'll never find another Zelda game challenging.

You've clearly never played a game and beat it with only one life left. Being forced to start over makes failing a massive punishment which makes the game more stressful and thus more difficult. You're more likely to curse each hit you take rather than comfort yourself that you just made a save state at full life.
