I fail to understand why games, especially nowadays, have to be "long" in order to be considered good or worthwhile.

If a movie is really long, it's probably self-indulgent. If a book is long, it's probably because the editor didn't do their job. Double albums are considered pretentious for a reason.

Of course, it didn't used to be this way! Films hovered around the 90 minute margin, novels could finished in a single afternoon and 12-inch vinyl had a built-in time limit.

The best games I've ever played were brisk. That doesn't mean arcade-like or fast-paced, just focused. This goes for modern gaming too; for instance, my favorite PS4 games are over in a fraction of the time AAA trash takes.

I almost want to blame RPGs for this, but that's probably unfair. All I know is, a game should never take more than 4-5 hours to finish. Getting 100% can be its own thing, but the core experience should be over and done with in the span of a single evening.
