Here is an opinion that ISN'T someone telling you to start out with their favorite FF or the first one they played:

Start with the SNES version of FFIV (called FFII) and play FFVI and FFV next in that order.
Now if you liked FFIV the most play FFIX next. (Both games mainly focus on their stories, have very linear gameplay and barely any optinons for character customization due to their characters being locked in their job classes)
Now if you liked FFV the most play FFVIII next. (Both games have a focus character customization and if you actually care about their stories it IS there but requires some exploration to fully figure them out)
Now if you liked FFVI the most play FFVII next. (Both games have roughly egual focus on story and character customization)

Still want more? Play through the other two games mentioned and FFX. You have now seen where the series reputation came from and what was so good in it. Now as for the NES games they are decent but unless you grew up with NES you probably aren't going to enjoy them.

While I'm in agreement with you in regards to people discrediting modern games as a whole, quit acting as if you're super duper tolerant of other people's opinions while shitting on people who choose to play games for whatever reasons they have, no matter how retarded they may seem to you. This is why the stigma attached to "gamers" and "gaming" is nonsensical, as the definition bends depending on who you're talking to.

I play video games. I love to play video games. There are modern games that I have an interest in, and I can acknowledge their quality, but I simply don't have the same drive to play newer games than old ones. This decision isn't fueled by nostalgia, but simply because I haven't encountered a game that's made me excited enough to buy a next-gen console or build a supercharged PC. I've got an old laptop that can emulate efficiently enough and a sizable physical collection, and that's really all I need.

Again, I can recognize the quality in some new games, but for one reason or another, I just don't really play them.

The only FF games I can stand to replay nowadays are FFI, III and V with V being my fave game atm. I enjoy the replay value provided by the job systems and different combinations of classes and the LACK of 2derp4u stories and crince worthy romance subplots.

V because it has the best gameplay of the old school FFs and I honestly can't stand the endless FMVs, romance subplots and 2deep4u stories in modern FFs anymore especially after seeing them so many times before.

If we are completely ignoring stats and usefulness in battle Cyan is my fave character if not, Galuf. I guess Kefka is my fave villain but I'm not one of the "Kefka is the best villain evar becuz he destroyed teh world and had no real motivation for it!!!1!" retards, I like him because he doubles as a comic relief and because we see him gradually getting stronger from being the emperor's errant boy to killing espers to "destroying" the world.

Fave OST is VIII's by far and I guess my fave track is FFVI's world map theme.

>Favorite moment?
Finally beating Cloud of Darkness after surviving Crystal Tower and the the boss rush leading up to her as it actually gives a sense of accomplishment that is absent from newer FFs.

As someone who has been playing the FF games since the very first game I honestly believe they simply kill the series right now and never make any new FF games ever again. That way the series can at least have somewhat respectable death while it still has some dignity and respect left. However since that isn't going to happen (since any new entry in the series is able to sell with it's name alone no matter how shitty they are) I genuinely believe they should take a look at the very first games in the series and figure out what made the series so great to begin with. Let the environment do most of the talking instead of FMV cutscenes, reduce the amount of storytelling in favor of exploration, take out the unnecessary romance subplots, have a job system to increase the replay value of the games, etc... sometimes less truly is more.
