Hard to say what references were provided. The NES manual only uses masculine pronouns to refer to Samus, while the Metroid II manual uses feminine. That's clearly an interpretation of an Omega Metroid, and it's colored pink-- at least one version of the Metroid II manual was monchrome with pink colors. It's possible they just faxed whoever drew that a picture of Samus and some space aliens for the character to blast.
