It works well only if it has actual artistic direction of some sort., although I love dungeon crawlers so I won't complain if the game is good.

This seems really neat, but the combat system is not giving me a great first impression. I'll probably give it another couple of hours to see if it clicks.

NES seems pretty underpowered and low in buttons. Aren't the dungeon crawlers on the system fairly basic?

And on this topic, I remember a few 16-bit dungeon crawlers. One I rented (but never finished) was Arcana on the SNES, which I remember being fairly mediocre. At retro shops I've also seen ports of Wizardry, Eye of the Beholder and Might and Magic, but other than the already mentioned Shin Megami Tensei, I'm not really aware of any other console titles from the era.

I'm enjoying this one, but the ice labyrinth is a bitch.

Sometimes it gets tidious and you WILL NEED to level up if you want to keep going. But once you learn some basic spells and your Element familiar is pumped up, it gets pretty fun to battle.

Despite the fact that it's a rather generic dungeon crawler, I really enjoy Arcana for some reason. It's got a really pleasing aesthetic to it.

There area bunch of really cool games that were never released in English too; the Aretha series, Bakumatsu Kohrinden Oni (easily ranks with the best of the best for the system), Gokinjo Boukentai, just off the top of my head.

A first person RPG I do think is underrated is Sword of Hope II on the gameboy. I never really got lost in it either, so you shouldn't really have to do deal with the "graph paper required" problem.

For the GBA, try Mazes of Fate. Avoid the DS version like the plague.

>Arcana for Super NES

A really odd mix of proto-FPS and Final Fantasy type gameplay. You actually navigated through the world in a sort of pseudo-3D, and PCs/NPCs/enemies were represented as cards.

I enjoyed it more than most I guess. It had some pretty good music too.

I've always really liked Arcana. It's nothing special, though; not much in the way of puzzles or any kind of hard thinking, but it's really fun and I like the story, as minimal as it can be.

The super famicom Megami Tensei games (especially "if...") are probably my favorite of the genre, at least as far as /vr/ games go. The Megaten setting is just so enchanting.
