It should go back to being an FPS and it should do a series reboot because his story was over at the finish of H2.
One of the issues with Corvus/Heretic is rpg games werent as common to conventional video gamers at the time so heretic was an early crash course for them. Hexen tried to make it much more like an rpg. Warcraft 2 brought rpg style elements to strategy gamers (I didnt even pick up WC1). And Quake 1 brought the mystical zombie-movie setting to modern gun first person. I guess by the time EverQuest came out average video gamers were ready for a 3d rpg game.

With the explosion of 3d rpgs out there unfortunately Heretic is rather lost in the sea and its not something that a reboot can top. There are people who will go "Oh this is supposed to be like doom but with magic stuff" and then other people will say its like a FPS version of Diablo 3 except you only get one character, and the loot isnt randomized or sellable. It could be done but it would be like a knockoff of D44M (indeed, technically Heretic was a knockoff of Doom2).

Corvus could come back but unless the setting of Heretic was GREATLY expanded to truly give alot more territory to explore (and at the same time not be an mmo) there's nothing that would set it apart.
> im talking about like 50-100 hours of gameplay kind of mapping and exploration, and not switch hunts either
> long quest to get some item, you think it can be used to kill the serpent riders so when you find it you think its the end
> nope, when you go to certain temple you been to before looking for clues to what to do next, something eats the magic staff, turns out it was just a key to open up some gateway

pump a few SSG into it first and you'll get the one-shot BFG (point blank range mind you) probably every time
