the usage I am talking of is more literal. a member of a group acting as proxy for that group. if I am latino, and I see there are no latino members of the Avengers team, I might still watch/read it. If I see a latino, who is not a stereotype and is well written, I am a lot more likely to watch/read it. people love to hear about themselves. they also love to feel like part of the group.

Me, personally, I just love women. I have always loved stories with female protagonists, provided they are well written. if some 12y/o girl is inspired to become a scientist because of Lucca, in Chrono Trigger, great! I like girls, girl scientists, and girls in video games. triple win, for me!
