To be fair, I made it to the Metroid Queen. I didn't even know she was the final boss, that game seemed to go on forever. I never beat her because I didn't understand that you were supposed to crawl into her mouth to bomb her innards.

Similar story with Link's Awakening. Got to Turtle Rock. Never found that Fire Rod and eventually lost the cartridge.

Recently, for the past year or two, I've been seeing a fringe group of people coming out of the woodwork asserting that Metroid II is some kind of high art game. They claim that Metroid II is "supposed" to be a dark, horrifying, grim examination of the horrors of genocide that asserts a strong anti-violence message. They claim that it is essentially Shadow of the Colossus over a decade before it came out, how you are supposed to feel guilty for your actions taking out the Metroids, and how the ending is supposed to make you reflect on what you did and represent Samus overcoming her genocidal tendencies and showing signs of pacifism. These people have been vocal opponents of the remakes, both the official and fanmade ones, for being "pro-violence" and "missing the point" of the original themes.

My questions are:

Where the hell is this mindset coming from?

and

Is there any truth to it whatsoever? Any design documents about how you are supposed to feel guilty for killing the Metroids, or that it was intentionally designed to be a horror game, or anything of that nature?

Anyone else here think Metroid II is really underrated? It's basically considered the black sheep of the Metroid series and now that there was an impressive fan remake (and an official remake coming next month), I see a lot of people say it's not worth playing at all now. I disagree though, and I think it has a certain charm and oppressive atmosphere that neither remake seems to have captured.

How come the second Metroid aged so much worse than the first and third ones?

I got Metroid II a few months ago too. Never owned it as a kid since my friend had it, and it wasn't until lately that I wanted to play the real thing instead of emulating.

I'm at the point now where I'm just kind of wandering around aimlessly because I'm not sure what to do next. The last useful thing I remember doing was collecting the Ice Beam.

Is there anyone who prefers Metroid II to Super Metroid?

Note, I'm talking about the original, not the fanmade "remake".

What are some old-school games similar to pic related?

Looking for:
>going into dangerous areas and hunting/killing something to advance
>scary/creepy creature and environment designs
>platforming elements, maybe some action as well
>preferably sci-fi themed, but I'll take fantasy as well

I've played most of the metroid 2d games, the first, super metroid, fusion, zero mission, even a rom hack of super metroid (hyper metroid) But I could never get far in Metroid 2. I tried to but something just didn't click with me. I don't know if its the screen size and character ratio (she takes up a huge portion of the screen), or if its the lack of map.

any advice for making it more manageable to play through it, since I do want to play it.
