>You just keep buying these same shitty Famiclones over and over.
Just like Tamagotchi's and Pokemon cards. Pokemon games too, but that's for another thread

The top two are actually not Famiclones, NX-35 in particular is pretty cool as it can play a few more consoles as well as MP3's and video files.

Some of the complaints I've seen for these are just silly. It's like going to McDonald's and complaining that they don't have filet mignon. I can see if they were the same price as higher chip devices like the RG505, but for a fun cheap toy to toss around they are fine.

Right, in a nutshell the SNES itself is not that hard to emulate, but games that use special chips (especially the SA-1 chip notoriously for some reason) tend to perform significantly worse on very low end devices. NES, Genesis and GBA don't really have this problem since they don't really use special chips, but on the flipside most low end handhelds don't seem to offer SEGA CD or 32X support, solely because they lack the ability to add BIOS files (SEGA CD is actually very easy to emulate in comparison). That said, in my experience SNES is usually playable, but not perfect on something in this price range.

OP can go for the Data Frog but games like Yoshi's Island would be better played using the GBA ports due to being easier to emulate. Good news is there is also a very easy way to convert SMS and GG games to GBA games for these kinds of devices if they aren't supported natively.

What is your budget, OP? Do you have a preference for style or form factor? Honestly anything from Anbernic, Miyoo, or PowKiddy will be better quality, plus they support more systems (like SEGA CD/32X, TG-16/Turbo CD, PS1, MSX, NGPC, etc) thanks to custom firmware. The cheaper ones like SF2000 are still good for the price, just not as powerful. If you like NES games you could always just go for a Famiclone too, they're significantly cheaper and usually have at least a few good ones built in.

It depends on what you're trying to emulate. If you like the vertical form factor, 353VS is slightly cheaper than 353V with I think less RAM or something, 351V is an earlier model but still more powerful than 35XX. The 35XX if you still want should be good for everything up to PS1 at least. There's also Miyoo Mini Plus and PowKiddy's RGB20S. Honestly there is nothing wrong with picking up a few low end handhelds here and there as well. I have a bunch of these at this point, most of them can't go beyond SNES and GBA and two are straight of Famiclones, but it gets the job done for a quick retro gaming fix, and they do look neat on a shelf when displayed on a shelf. Original Game Boy wasn't really that complex anyway lol

A lot of my favorite games were released that year, between DKC, Mega Man X, Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles... Though 1995 was also huge for DKC2, Yoshi's Island, Saturn, and PS1. The 90's in general was such a fantastic time for console gaming. No other decade could really compete.

>Is there a particular variety of these that sucks the least? I've always wanted one to keep in my bag or something dumb.
It depends on what you're looking for. If you want an actual good handheld you're better off going with a Miyoo Mini or Anbernic's RG35xx (or 351v/353v depending on how much you are willing to spend).

I really like the RS69 (pic related) which adds Genesis, GBA, and (shoddy) SNES support, and the ability to add your own games, but they're kind of hard to find now. There's a few similar models though, like the M3S and AN08. Emulation isn't great on them but they're a lot better than the standard Famiclones and can generally be found at a good price. Honestly though these are very low risk purchases, at least for me. I was expecting to hate the Famiclone ones and was pleasantly surprised with them. Most of them just have Contra, Adventure Island, and the Turtles games, but a few of them have Mega Man 3 or SMB3. It depends on the model

I managed to get the white RS-69 two years ago and really wanted the gold but they ran out, unlike the other handhelds with this form factor they can play other consoles and you can add roms, and the BittBoy firmware is even compatible with it, meaning it can do way more

You can get a proper backlit emulator handheld with built in rechargeable battery for nearly half the price, also Game Boy Color is painfully easy to emulate. Highly recommend going that route instead, especially if you have any interest in other handhelds like Game Gear, GBA, TurboExpress etc.
