>ironically it's because of the few "hardcore" players left. old games do have so much stuff but they never use them in their "competitive play". hence newer ones need to satisfy their nitpicky standards because nobody play those games for fun anymore.

Stuff like this is why I wasn't a fan of Quake Champions. The audience they were aiming for (and most of what's left, I suppose) was the hardcore audience that wants it to be an eSport. Personally, I liked Quake and UT, not because of esport clanfags, but because of their crazy custom content scenes and pub communities.

Take CS, for example. I was never much into playing de_dust2 on repeat every day. Give me some stupid gamemodes on func_vehicle maps, or 16v16 on rats maps, Gungame DM on Simpsons maps, that sort of crazy shit. But Valve went the eSports route with matchmaking, putting it front-and-center, and CS:GO's custom content/pub community is a shadow of what once was. CS:S and CS 1.6 currenly have more funmaps and custom gamemode servers than CS:GO despite CS:GO having 40x the player count and the same level of custom content support (excepting func_vehicle).
