It's honestly baffling SCEA chose to push Toshinden rather than Tekken as their Virtua Fighter killer but I guess they were looking at it having actual 3D stages and Sophia standing out more than the original design for Nina without understanding it played like shit. Toshinden 2 didn't have being console only to hide being bad, had to directly compete with Soul Edge on its console release, and by then they'd realized Tekken was popular and promoted Tekken 2 instead so that was pretty much the end of that.
