I was also surprised about DKC at first, but then again, Crash also sold very well in Japan on PSX. I guess Japan doesn't really care, they just like good platformers.
>Not all of them, Japan doesn't give a shit about Zelda or Metroid.
They don't like Metroid much, yes. Zelda sold pretty well though, just less than in the West.
What I meant was that despite N64 selling just 5.5 mln units or so, both MK64, SM64 and Smash 64 all sold around 2 mln units. And Zelda wasn't far behind.

for comparison, N64 sales in Japan, where it was considered a "failure" and sold a very similar amount of consoles
17 games broke the 600k mark and 10 the 1 million mark

interestingly though, if you look at N64 game sales, you may assume they did about same as Saturn games (since both consoles sold about same amount of units), but that isn't the case. you can see that while only VF2 broke 1 mln sales mark on Saturn, 10 games broke this mark on N64. this could be attributed to bundles, but still it's a fact, and overall the game sales figures look clearly better than Saturn's.
So I think at the end of day, Saturn games were the least popular among the big 3 in Japan. Which says a lot about its "popularity".

it's the fact that Nintendo went down to the level of Mega Drive and PC Engine that really confuses me.
in fact, the sales of its major hits were quite strong it seems. it wasn't on the level of DQVII/FFVII that sold ~4 mln each. but still, 2.something million is half of 4 million, not quarter.
but it looks like n64 was literally no gaems beside nintendo's 1st party output… most 3rd party stuff on it didnt sell. you can see after 20-30 best selling games it tapers off hard, to games that managed 100k at most.
